Why Medical Debt Will Stay on Your Credit Report—And Why Some Say That’s a Good Thing

A federal judge in Texas has overturned a Biden administration rule that would have removed medical debt from Americans' credit reports, siding with critics who say the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau overstepped its authority. The rule aimed to ease financial pressure on the nearly 100 million Americans carrying medical debt, which the CFPB argued is a poor predictor of loan default and should not impact a person's ability to access housing, credit, or jobs.

Supporters of the ruling, including the Consumer Data Industry Association, say it preserves the integrity of the credit system by ensuring lenders have access to complete financial information. They argue that excluding medical debt could lead to riskier lending and unintended consequences like tighter credit or higher interest rates. To them, it’s not about penalizing people for being sick—it’s about maintaining transparency and fairness in a system that affects everyone.

RFK Jr. Fires Top Aides in HHS Leadership Restructure

Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has dismissed two senior staff members—Chief of Staff Heather Flick Melanson and Deputy Chief of Staff for Policy Hannah Anderson—in a leadership restructure at the department. According to sources familiar with the decision, Kennedy made the move after losing confidence in the two aides.
